About

Richard Allen Dysart was an American actor whose career spanned theater, film, and television. Trained in oral communication, he began on stage and was a founding member of the American Conservatory Theater; he rose to prominence on Broadway, notably for That Championship Season, a role that earned him critical recognition and a Drama Desk Award in 1972.

In film, he often played figures of authority and compassionate professionals, appearing in productions such as Being There, The Thing, Pale Rider, and Back to the Future Part III. He also did voice work, notably in the English-language version of Laputa: Castle in the Sky and in the animated series Spawn.

He became widely known for his role as Leland McKenzie on the series L.A. Law (1986–1994), which tackled contentious social and legal issues of its time. For that performance he received four Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor and won the Primetime Emmy in 1992.

Throughout his career, Dysart established a reputation as an interpreter of moral and professional authority, demonstrating versatility between stage and screen until his death in 2015.
