About

Richard Milhous Nixon (Yorba Linda, January 9, 1913 – New York, April 22, 1994) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 37th President of the United States from 1969 until 1974, when he became the first and only President to resign from office. Before that he had been a member of the House of Representatives and a senator for the state of California, as well as the 36th Vice President of the United States from 1953 to 1961 under Dwight D. Eisenhower.

He ran for the presidency in the 1960 election, narrowly losing the contest to John F. Kennedy. Two years later he ran for Governor of California, losing again, this time to Pat Brown. Nixon ran for the presidency again in 1968, defeating Hubert Humphrey.

It was during Nixon's administration that the end of the Vietnam War occurred with the American defeat, in 1973. His visit to China in 1972 opened diplomatic relations between the two countries, and in the same year he managed to sign the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union.
