About

Richard Ramírez (Ricardo Leyva Muñoz Ramírez) was an American criminal whose actions in 1984–1985 affected the Greater Los Angeles and San Francisco areas. Known in the press as the “Night Stalker,” he carried out a series of burglaries, kidnappings, sexual assaults, and murders that alarmed communities and drew extensive media attention.

In his crimes Ramírez used a variety of weapons and tools — firearms, knives, an axe, a lug wrench, and blunt instruments — and became known for leaving satanic symbols at crime scenes. The extreme violence, the variety of methods, and his apparent lack of remorse at trial heightened his public notoriety.

Convicted in 1989 of multiple murders, attempted murders, sexual assaults, and robberies, he was sentenced to death and remained on death row until he died of complications from lymphoma in 2013. Ramírez’s case is frequently cited in studies of serial crime in the United States and continues to be referenced in discussions of the relationship between criminal violence, the media, and social reaction in the 1980s.
