About

Richard Tauber was an Austrian tenor prominent in the first third of the 20th century, celebrated for his lyrical voice, refined legato and remarkable breath control. He began his career in lyric opera, debuting in 1912 and quickly earning a reputation for his ability to learn repertoire rapidly, which won him major contracts, including with the Vienna State Opera and the Dresden company.

Over the course of his career, Tauber moved between opera and operetta repertoires, singing roles in works by Mozart, Gounod, Puccini, Bizet and Strauss, and introducing wider audiences to lyrical singing through recitals and musical films. His performances helped popularize an ideal of vocal elegance associated with the Viennese tradition.

Targeted by the rise of Nazism because of his Jewish ancestry, he left Germany in the 1930s and established an international artistic presence, with regular seasons in London and tours in the United States. He died in 1948 in London, leaving a legacy as a technical and stylistic reference for 20th-century lyric tenors.
