About

Rickey Henderson was an American outfielder whose 25-season career in Major League Baseball (1979–2003) established him as one of the sport’s most influential players. Known by the nickname “Man of Steal,” he was renowned as the greatest leadoff hitter and baserunner in history, holding career records for stolen bases (1,406), runs, unintentional walks, and home runs by a leadoff batter. His 1982 season, with 130 stolen bases, remains the single-season record.

Henderson was a ten-time American League All-Star, the AL Most Valuable Player in 1990, and a twelve-time stolen base leader; he also led the league in runs five times. He played for nine teams, including four separate stints with the Oakland Athletics, and was a member of the World Series–winning teams of 1989 (Oakland) and 1993 (Toronto), consistently noted for combining an exceptional on-base percentage with modest power and extraordinary speed.

An icon for his aggressive playing style and exuberant personality, Henderson was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009 in his first year of eligibility. His technical legacy — efficiency as a leadoff hitter, strategic use of the walk, and the ability to turn baserunning into runs — influenced generations of players and remains a benchmark for evaluators and fans of the game.
