About

Ricky Fataar is a South African musician of Malay descent whose career spans performance, recording and production. He began professionally as a child in the Durban band The Flames, which achieved local success and took him to London and then Los Angeles, where he worked with Carl Wilson and recorded the album The Flame.

In the 1970s he joined the lineup of the Beach Boys (1971–1974), contributing to albums such as Carl and the Passions – "So Tough" and Holland, touring and recording with the group and helping broaden the band’s sound and image during that period. Later in the decade he appeared in the mockumentary film The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash, playing guitarist Stig O'Hara and recording with the Rutles project.

After emigrating to Australia, he expanded his work as a studio musician and producer, collaborating with artists such as Tim Finn, Split Enz, Crowded House and others, and composing scores for film and television. Since 1990 he has been known for his long association as Bonnie Raitt’s drummer, alongside occasional work as a percussionist and producer on various international projects.

His legacy is notable for versatility—playing drums, guitar, bass and exotic instruments—and for his transition from a youthful star in South Africa to a respected figure on the international rock, pop and soundtrack circuit.
