About

Robert Indiana was an American artist associated with the Pop Art movement, internationally recognized for the image LOVE, created in 1964 and later rendered as monumental sculptures and multiples that are now in major museum collections. His work uses simple words—such as EAT, DIE, HUG, ERR and LOVE—exploring the power of language, American identity and personal memories through direct forms and colors inspired by road signs and vernacular visual culture.

Trained in Chicago and having studied and worked in schools and studios in New York and Europe, Indiana adopted the surname of his native state and developed a hard-edged aesthetic that became the hallmark of his output. Public success came in the 1960s and 1970s with works such as the Museum of Modern Art card and Cor-Ten steel sculptures, which made him a central figure in debates about public art and serial reproduction.

In addition to painting and sculpture, he worked in lithography, posters and stage design—including costumes for the opera The Mother of Us All—and appeared in experimental films. His career was also intertwined with cultural and personal debates, producing works that engaged simultaneously with the market, the public and his own biography.
