About
Robert Preston, stage name of Robert Preston Meservey, was an American actor and singer whose career spanned film, theatre, and television. Trained at the Pasadena Playhouse, he became known for versatile roles that prevented him from being cast in a single type: he appeared in westerns, musicals, comedies, and adventure films from the 1930s through the 1980s.
His greatest recognition came on stage and screen for the role of Professor Harold Hill in the musical The Music Man (1957) and in the 1962 film adaptation. Decades later, he returned to public and critical attention in Victor/Victoria (1982), for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and in The Last Starfighter (1984), in which he played the eccentric Centauri.
A World War II veteran, he served in the Air Force as an intelligence officer. Married for 47 years to actress Catherine Craig, Preston built a long and varied career, marked by engaging performances and by moving between stage and screen. He died in 1987, leaving the legacy of an adaptable performer admired by audiences and critics.
