About

An American actor known for intense performances and for portraying volatile, unconventional characters, Rod Steiger became a prominent figure in postwar cinema. Aligned with the method approach to acting, his visceral commitment yielded memorable roles such as Charley in On the Waterfront, the traumatized Sol Nazerman in The Pawnbroker — which earned him the Silver Bear for Best Actor — and police chief Bill Gillespie in In the Heat of the Night, a performance that brought him the Academy Award for Best Actor.

From the 1950s through the 1970s, Steiger worked in both Hollywood and European productions in search of challenging parts: from a politician in Doctor Zhivago to historical figures such as Napoleon in Waterloo and Benito Mussolini in Last Days of Mussolini. His filmography also includes genre pictures and controversial roles that demonstrate his versatility.

Health and personal problems affected his career from the 1980s onward, limiting his appearances to smaller productions, although he returned occasionally to prominent roles, as in The Hurricane (1999). Steiger left a legacy as an actor of commanding dramatic presence, remembered for his interpretive intensity and for influencing the acting of his generation.
