Rodney Peete is a former American football player who served as a quarterback in the NFL from the late 1980s into the early 2000s. A graduate of USC, he made his mark in college football as a 1988 All‑American, won the Johnny Unitas Award as the nation’s top senior quarterback, and left USC holding several passing records. He also pursued a parallel college baseball career, posting notable offensive numbers and drawing attention in Major League Baseball drafts.
Selected in the sixth round of the 1989 draft, Peete played for multiple NFL franchises, including the Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers. His professional career combined reliable play as a backup with stretches as a starter, mobility and skill as a rushing option, and injuries that at times interrupted promising seasons.
Peete earned state and institutional honors: he was inducted into the USC Athletics Hall of Fame and the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame. His sporting legacy blends two‑sport versatility, contributions at both the collegiate and professional levels, and recognition for performance and longevity in top‑level American football.
