About

Roger B. Chaffee was an officer in the United States Navy, aviator and aeronautical engineer who became a member of the Apollo astronaut corps. A graduate in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University, he combined a military career with aviation specialization, serving as a naval pilot and as officer responsible for quality control and safety in photographic reconnaissance squadrons.

During his naval service he took part in surveillance operations that included crucial photographs of Cuba during the missile crisis, an action that earned him the Air Medal. In 1963 he was selected as an astronaut (Group 3) and served as CAPCOM for Gemini 3 and Gemini 4, before being assigned as the third pilot for the Apollo 1 mission.

Chaffee died in 1967 alongside colleagues Virgil Grissom and Ed White during a ground test for the Apollo 1 mission. His death prompted major revisions to NASA’s safety procedures, and he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, as well as recognition for his role in the early era of crewed lunar flight.

His legacy remains connected both to the technical preparation of the early Apollo missions and to improvements in safety standards for human space exploration.
