About

Roger Maris was a prominent American baseball player who played right field in Major League Baseball from 1957 to 1968. He became the focal point of the 1961 season by hitting 61 home runs for the New York Yankees, breaking Babe Ruth’s 1927 record; that achievement entered the record books and remained unmatched for 37 years.

Over twelve seasons, Maris wore the uniforms of four different franchises and appeared in seven World Series, winning the title three times. His performance earned him major honors, including two American League MVP awards (1960 and 1961) and a Gold Glove as an outfielder, as well as multiple All-Star selections.

Maris’s impact on the team and fans was recognized when the Yankees retired his number 9. His career is remembered both for the landmark record and for steady excellence on big stages, placing him among the most celebrated players of the postwar era in MLB.
