Romain Bouteille

About

Romain Bouteille was a French playwright, actor, comedian and singer, regarded as one of the pioneers of café‑theatre in France. Author of around thirty plays with libertarian themes, his works ranged from the folklore of the alternative scene to social critique, reflecting a libertarian and nonconformist spirit that influenced theater in the decades that followed.

A symbolic co‑founder of the Café de la Gare in Paris, Bouteille helped create a collective space where significant names in contemporary performance emerged. Together with his fellow performers he promoted a less institutional form of theatre, open to experimentation and to the emergence of young artists, forming a hub of theatrical renewal.

Over the course of his career he also worked in film and television, appearing in movies by various directors, which broadened his visibility beyond the stage. In later years he continued to create and direct small performance venues, including a fifty‑seat theatre‑cabaret he ran with other artists.

His legacy is evident in the spread of the café‑theatre model and in his influence on generations of performers and playwrights who found in those spaces creative freedom and alternative professional paths.
