Ron Paul is an American physician and politician, known for his long career as a member of the United States House of Representatives and for his presidential campaigns in 1988, 2008, and 2012. A graduate of Duke University School of Medicine, he practiced obstetrics and gynecology before and during part of his public career, and served in the Air Force on missions outside the United States.
In politics, Paul became a central figure in American libertarianism, advocating constitutionalism, strong decentralization of power, and a drastic reduction of federal spending and taxes. He supported abolishing the income tax and criticized federal welfare programs, promoted a shift toward a more competitive health-care market, and called for returning responsibilities to the states on issues such as education and abortion regulation.
Author of works influenced by the Austrian School of Economics, Paul gained notoriety for his fiscal consistency and for the nickname "Dr. No," given for votes opposing measures he considered unconstitutional. His political and intellectual activity influenced contemporary conservative and libertarian movements, leaving a legacy as a promoter of debate on limiting government and economic liberty.
