About
María Rosa Torre González was a teacher, city councilor, and a leading figure in the feminist movement in Mexico. Educated at the Instituto Literario para niñas de Mérida, she became a student and later the director of a school that promoted a progressive curriculum, including scientific subjects and feminist theory, which shaped her educational and civic work.
During the Mexican Revolution she collaborated with the Maderista movement and, after the 1913 coup, engaged in activities supporting the Constitutionalist forces, also serving as a nurse with the troops of Salvador Alvarado. That experience turned her into a political activist within the context of Alvarado’s reforms in Yucatán.
In the 1910s and 1920s she devoted herself to organizing congresses and women’s leagues: she presided over the Second Feminist Congress of 1916, helped found the Liga Rita Cetina Gutiérrez and, together with Elvia Carrillo Puerto, established dozens of leagues that worked on education, public health, combating exploitation, and training women workers.
In 1922 she was elected regidora of Mérida for the Partido Socialista del Sureste, becoming the first woman in Mexico to hold office through popular election at a time when women’s suffrage had not yet been universally recognized in the country. Her legacy is associated with promoting education for women and collective organization for gender equality.
