About

Rossana Podestà, stage name of Carla Dora Podestà, was an Italian actress whose career spanned from the 1950s to the mid-1980s. Born in Tripoli during Italy’s colonial period, she moved with her family to Rome after World War II, where her beauty and screen presence quickly attracted the attention of the film industry.

Discovered by Léonide Moguy, she made her debut in 1951 and appeared in more than sixty films in both Italian and international productions. She became prominent in the so-called peplum genre, portraying mythological figures such as Helen of Troy and Nausicaa, which brought her wide visibility in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Over the course of her career she worked in a range of genres—from historical epics to comedies and popular fare—appearing in films directed by figures such as Robert Wise and Mario Camerini. In the 1970s she appeared in lower-profile films and posed for the Italian edition of Playboy in 1978.

Having ended her film work in 1985, she is remembered as one of the striking female images of mid‑20th‑century Italian cinema, noted for emblematic roles in epics and commercial productions of that era.
