About

Roy Kelton Orbison, nicknamed The Big O, was an influential American singer and songwriter and one of the pioneers of rock and roll, whose career spanned more than four decades. Orbison was internationally recognized for his ballads about lost love, his rhythmically advanced melodies, his three-octave vocal range, his characteristic dark sunglasses and his occasional use of falsetto, exemplified by songs such as "Only The Lonely", "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "Crying". In 1988, he was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

His parents, Orbie Lee and Nardine, gave him his first guitar when he was six years old. As might be expected for a young man living in Texas, his musical influences were gospel and country.

Encouraged by his father and uncle, Roy began singing in shows and on the radio before he was ten years old. After a few years, he met Johnny Cash, who advised Roy to send a copy of "Ooby Dooby" to Sam Phillips of Sun Records, the label of Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. By June 1956, his first major hit had been recorded and was selling 20,000 copies.
