About

Russ Tamblyn (Russell Irving Tamblyn) is an American actor and dancer whose career ranges from classic studio films to independent productions and television. Discovered as a young performer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, he became known for musicals such as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) and earned critical recognition with an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Peyton Place (1957). His best-remembered film role is Riff, the leader of the Jets in West Side Story (1961).

Beyond musicals, Tamblyn worked across diverse genres — from westerns and film noir to horror — and appeared in notable titles such as The Haunting (1963). His career experienced interruptions, including military service, and in subsequent decades he moved between low-budget productions, artistic collaborations, and activities outside film, including choreography and side work in construction and software.

In the 1990s he reemerged on television as the eccentric Dr. Lawrence Jacoby in the series Twin Peaks, establishing a cult following with new audiences. His legacy combines the versatility of a performer who moved between dance and acting, influencing generations through a blend of physical technique and dramatic intensity.
