About

Ruth Landshoff‑Yorck was an actress and writer of German origin who built a career spanning the avant‑garde cinemas of the 1920s and the literary circles of the United States. Born in Berlin to a middle‑class family involved in the arts, she began in silent film with small parts in notable works, including Nosferatu (1922), before training as an actress at Max Reinhardt’s school and performing on stages in Berlin, Leipzig and Vienna.

Active in the vibrant cultural scene of the Weimar Republic, she kept connections with intellectual figures such as Bertolt Brecht, Thomas Mann and Albert Einstein, and became known for a bohemian lifestyle that included frequenting progressive artistic and social circles. After the rise of Nazism she emigrated via France, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, settling in the United States in 1937.

In New York she focused on writing and translating, publishing novels, poems, essays and memoirs, many in private editions. Her work includes titles such as Lili Marlene. An Intimate Diary and collections of poems and essays that chronicle her cosmopolitan life. Her papers, the Ruth Yorck Archive, are preserved at a university institution, attesting to her literary and cultural legacy.
