About

Ry Cooder is an American musician, composer and producer, best known for his mastery of the slide guitar and for exploring diverse musical traditions. Over a multifaceted career he worked as a multi-instrumentalist and session player, collaborating with artists such as the Rolling Stones, John Lee Hooker, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Randy Newman and Ali Farka Touré, among others.

His solo work draws on blues, folk, country, R&B, Tex‑Mex and traditional sounds, reworking and updating older repertoires into original arrangements. In the 1970s he released albums that became reference points for this fusion of genres, and in 1979 he produced Bop Till You Drop, the first widely distributed popular-music album to be recorded digitally.

As a producer he is noted for conceiving and producing Buena Vista Social Club (1997), a project that revived and brought global attention to traditional Cuban artists and inspired Wim Wenders’s documentary of the same name. In film, he composed memorable scores, including Paris, Texas (1984), whose sonic atmosphere has been cited as an influence by contemporary musicians.

Cooder is remembered for building bridges between popular music and local traditions, expanding audiences and preserving repertoires that were often marginalized.
