About

Don Bosco (Giovanni Melchior Bosco) was an Italian Catholic priest and a central figure in the Christian education of poor youth in the 19th century. Influenced by Francis de Sales and devoted to Mary Help of Christians, he devoted his life to creating alternatives to the partial practices of Turin’s urban-industrial environment, where migration and juvenile poverty were conspicuous.

Perceiving the traditional parish ministry as ineffective in meeting the needs of boys who worked on the streets and in workshops, he founded institutions and associations focused on moral, professional, and religious formation. Among his initiatives were the Pious Society of Saint Francis de Sales, the Salesians, and, together with Maria Domenica Mazzarello, the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.

He also established lay movements, such as the Association of Salesian Cooperators and the Association of Mary Help of Christians, and in 1875 began publishing the Salesian Bulletin, a continuous vehicle for his educational work. Canonized in 1934, he is remembered as a patron of youth and for bequeathing an institutional network that preserved his pedagogical method and commitment to the poor.
