About

Salvador Novo was a central figure in Mexican letters of the twentieth century, known as a poet, essayist, playwright, and chronicler. A member of the group Los Contemporáneos, he played a decisive role in the country’s cultural renewal, founding the Teatro de Ulises and the magazine Contemporáneos, venues that introduced avant-garde theatrical and literary practices to Mexican audiences. His prose is noted for its agility and irony, and his output includes more than twenty books of poetry, plays, and extensive chronicles on Mexico’s intellectual life.

Novo gained international recognition with the play El tercer Fausto (1934) and staged pioneering productions at his theatre La Capilla, where he presented works such as Waiting for Godot. He also worked in radio, film, television, and advertising, serving as a writer and director on cultural projects and helping to spread theatre through television broadcasts in the 1950s. He held posts in federal secretariats related to publishing and cultural promotion.

Appointed Chronicle Writer of Mexico City and a member of the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua, he devoted part of his later work to history and historical chronicles, notably on Coyoacán and the country’s cultural life. His legacy endures in his extensive critical and memoiristic output and in archives preserved by Mexican institutions.
