About

Sándor Márai was a Hungarian writer and journalist born in Košice (now Slovakia), regarded as one of the foremost figures in the Hungarian language of the 20th century. The author of more than sixty books — including poems, plays, novels and diaries — he built a body of work focused on the subtleties of memory, the decline of the bourgeoisie and the moral tensions of modern life. His novel The Embers became a seminal work by exploring friendship, honor and the weight of the past within a temporal microcosm that also reflects the historical disintegration of 20th‑century Europe.

From the 1920s until 1948 he produced most of his literary output and established a reputation as a perceptive chronicler of social change. Elected a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1945, Márai broke with the communist regime and went into exile, an experience that marked his personal and intellectual life and led to his works being banned in his country for many years.

In exile he worked for Radio Free Europe and lived in Switzerland, England, the United States and Italy. His diaries and memoirs, published posthumously in several languages, provide a critical testimony on freedom of thought, individual responsibility and the personal cost of holding liberal convictions under authoritarian regimes. In 1990 he was posthumously awarded the Kossuth Prize.
