About

Sarah Lois Vaughan was an American jazz singer, described by Scott Yanow as "one of the most marvelous voices of the 20th century".

Nicknamed "Sailor" (for her salty speech), "Sassy", and "The Divine" (A Divina), Sarah Vaughan was a Grammy Award winner and an NEA Jazz Masters recipient, the "highest honor in jazz", awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1989.

Vaughan's voice was characterized by its deep tone, great versatility, and her control of vibrato. Sarah Vaughan was one of the first vocalists to incorporate bebop phrasing.

During an engagement in New York, at the Blue Note Jazz Club in 1989, Vaughan was diagnosed with lung cancer, which would lead to her death the following year.
