About

Sergei Sergeyevitch Prokofiev was one of the most influential Russian composers of the twentieth century, known for combining melodic gift, rhythmic daring and a caustic sense of humor in works for ballet, opera, orchestra and piano. His output includes repertory landmarks such as the ballet Romeo and Juliet, the operas The Love for Three Oranges and War and Peace, the narrated children’s piece Peter and the Wolf, and scores for Sergei Eisenstein’s films.

Trained at a conservatory and precocious as a composer and pianist, Prokofiev developed a personal style that alternated neoclassicism, dissonance and lyricism, earning him both acclaim and controversy throughout his career. He lived in cultural centers of Europe and the United States before returning to the Soviet Union, where he became a central figure of Soviet music alongside Shostakovich.

Despite his prestige, his final years were marked by health problems and financial difficulties, and his work suffered interventions and censorship within the Soviet political context. Prokofiev’s legacy remains alive in the concert and ballet repertory thanks to the dramatic force and originality of his sonic inventions.
