About

Shivaji Bhonsle, known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was a 17th-century Maratha military leader and statesman who founded what became the Maratha Empire. Born into the Bhosle aristocracy, he established an independent kingdom with Raigad Fort as its capital and promoted the idea of Hindavi Swarajya — self-rule for the peoples of the Deccan region.

As a commander, Shivaji organized well-disciplined forces and reformed civil administration, instituting practices that strengthened the authority of the local state against regional sultanates and Mughal advances. He is also remembered for opposing abusive practices—such as mass plunder, slavery, and forced conversions—within his jurisdiction.

Militarily, he innovated by using guerrilla tactics (Ganimi Kava), emphasizing speed, surprise, and knowledge of terrain, factors that enabled successes against numerically and materially superior foes. His coronation as Chhatrapati in 1674 marked the affirmation of his sovereignty.

Shivaji’s legacy endures in India’s political and cultural history, especially in Maharashtra, where he is a symbol of regional resistance, effective governance, and a regionalized Hindu identity.
