About

Sid Hartman was a distinctive figure in American sports journalism, especially in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area. A reporter and commentator, he built a career spanning more than seven decades as a columnist for the region’s main newspaper and as a regular voice on WCCO radio, becoming a primary source of information about local teams and athletes. In 1947 he served briefly as general manager of the Minneapolis Lakers, helping to assemble one of the early dynasties in professional basketball.

Known for a direct, fact-driven style, Hartman prized scoops and maintained an extensive network of sources—from coaches and owners to sports stars—which made him influential within the sports world. His presence expanded across television and radio over the decades, and phrases like “my close personal friend” exemplified the familiar tone he used with public figures.

Hartman’s legacy includes statues and media spaces named in his honor, as well as thousands of signed columns that recorded generations of local sports. He remained professionally active until the end of his life and is remembered as the voice and historical record of sports in his community.
