About

French actress Simone Simon was best known in the 1930s and 1940s, dividing her career between France and the United States. Discovered in French cinema with Marc Allégret’s Lac aux dames (1934), she built a reputation for dramatic roles and an enigmatic presence that drew the attention of American producers.

Brought to Hollywood by 20th Century Fox in the mid-1930s, her American career was hampered by language difficulties and production setbacks, despite some praised performances. She returned to France and worked with significant figures such as Jean Renoir in La Bête Humaine (1938).

During World War II, she achieved her greatest recognition in RKO’s English-language productions, notably The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941) and, above all, Cat People (1942) and its follow-up The Curse of the Cat People (1944), films that cemented her legacy in suspense and psychological horror cinema.

After the 1950s her screen appearances became less frequent, with La Ronde (1950) a later highlight; her filmography concludes in 1973. Known for maintaining a private image, she is remembered as an actor of ambiguous features and a striking screen presence in both European and American cinema.
