About

Snooky Young — born Eugene Edward Young — was an eminent American trumpeter whose career spanned the height of the Big Band era into modern studio jazz. Renowned for his mastery of the plunger mute, he developed an expressive tonal palette that made him sought after by leading orchestras and bandleaders such as Jimmie Lunceford, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton and Gerald Wilson.

His career included serving as lead trumpet in Lunceford’s band (1939–1942) and three separate tenures with Count Basie, as well as being a founding member of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band. In the studios he maintained a long association with NBC and was part of The Tonight Show band from 1967 to 1992, moving between television work and prominent tours.

He recorded relatively little as a leader but appeared on numerous landmark sessions alongside artists such as Ray Charles, Jimmy Smith, Milt Jackson and The Band. In 2009 he received the NEA Jazz Masters Award in recognition of his contribution to jazz. His legacy rests in trumpet technique, plunger-mute voicing, and the influence he exerted on generations of players.
