About

Sophie of Brandenburg was born a princess and became Electress of Saxony through her marriage to Christian I. As consort she took part in the dynastic politics of the late sixteenth century and bore children who included successors to the Saxon electorate; as a widow she established her residence in Colditz.

From 1591 to 1601 she served as regent of Saxony on behalf of her son Christian II, sharing government with Frederick William I, Duke of Saxe‑Weimar. During this period she acted with confessional firmness: an orthodox Lutheran, she opposed crypto‑Calvinism and ordered the imprisonment of Nikolaus Crell, whose execution in 1601 became a notorious episode in local religious tensions.

Her actions left material and cultural traces in Dresden: she ordered the reopening of the former Franciscan church as the Church of St. Sophie, sponsored building works, and minted gold coins known as Sophiendukaten. She received and bequeathed jewelry and Renaissance goldsmithing objects that are now part of important collections. Public memory among orthodox Lutherans attributed to her the nickname “Judith of Saxony.”
