About

James Stephen "Steve" Fossett was an American businessman and adventurer who built a fortune in financial markets and became a global figure for his aviation and adventure feats. Over his career he set multiple records: solo balloon crossings (including the first solo crossing of the Pacific) and the first solo balloon circumnavigation in 2002; sailing speed records; and long-distance flights in ultralight aircraft, notably the nonstop solo circumnavigation in 2005–2006 in the Virgin Atlantic/GlobalFlyer.

Fossett also competed in endurance events and motorsport, including Le Mans, and undertook extreme expeditions in Alaska and across the English Channel, showing interests that ranged from aerial sports to polar and maritime adventures. His work and records were recognized by organizations such as the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.

He disappeared on September 3, 2007, after taking off in a single‑engine plane in the Nevada desert; wreckage and remains were later found in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and the NTSB report cited turbulence as a factor in the crash. Fossett left a legacy in sport aviation and solo exploration, remembered for pushing technical and human limits on long-distance flights.
