About
Franklin Story Musgrave is a physician, aerospace medicine researcher, and former American astronaut, notable for a multifaceted career from the 1960s through the 1990s. Trained in the military, he served in the Marine Corps as an instrumentation technician, aviation electrician, and pilot, accumulating extensive flight experience and hundreds of parachute jumps; he later studied across several academic fields and completed a medical degree with a focus on physiology and bio‑physics applied to the space environment.
At NASA from 1967 as a scientist-astronaut, Musgrave helped develop equipment essential to shuttle extravehicular activities, including suits, life-support systems, and human maneuvering units. He flew on six missions between 1983 and 1996—becoming the only person to operate on all five orbiters built—and performed several spacewalks, most notably during the Hubble Space Telescope repair mission (STS-61).
Over 1,282 hours in space, he established a reputation as a technical and clinical expert in space medicine. After leaving NASA in 1997, he worked as a consultant and spokesperson, appearing in documentaries and public projects on space exploration and remaining a reference among Space Shuttle-era astronauts.
