About

Stuart Allen Roosa was a United States Air Force pilot, aeronautical engineer, and NASA astronaut, best known for serving as Command Module Pilot on Apollo 14 (31 January–9 February 1971). While his crewmates Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell landed and worked on the lunar surface, Roosa remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Kitty Hawk, conducting a suite of experiments and completing 34 revolutions of the Moon, totaling 33 hours of solo orbital flight.

A graduate in aeronautical engineering from the University of Colorado, Roosa previously worked as a smokejumper for the U.S. Forest Service and as a test pilot in the Air Force, accumulating extensive experience in jet aircraft. Selected with the 1966 astronaut class, he also served as CAPCOM during the Apollo 1 fire and was part of support crews on earlier missions.

Among his notable contributions was a joint project with the U.S. Forest Service that carried seeds into lunar orbit—the so‑called “Moon Trees”—which germinated and were planted across the United States. After his space career he held positions in the private sector and founded Gulf Coast Coors. He received several honors, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and was posthumously inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.
