Sylvester McCoy, stage name of Percy James Patrick Kent‑Smith, is a Scottish actor whose career spans theatre, television, film and audio drama. Initially known as a physical comedian in experimental performances, he became noted for risky stunts and solo pieces that evoked silent‑film icons such as Stan Laurel and Buster Keaton. That physical and comic repertoire shaped his dramatic presence in the following decades.
McCoy achieved wide international recognition playing the Seventh incarnation of the Doctor in the series Doctor Who (1987–1989), a role he has returned to on several later occasions, including television specials, audio productions and anniversary appearances. His take on the character developed from an initially clownish tone into a darker, more manipulative figure, influencing critical and fan perceptions.
On film, he became known for portraying the wizard Radagast in The Hobbit trilogy (2012–2014). At the same time he maintained a solid theatre career, working with companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and appearing in classic adaptations and musicals. McCoy’s legacy lies in his versatility between physical comedy and drama, and in his enduring association with one of British pop culture’s central characters.
