About
Ted Ligety is a retired American alpine skier, best known for his specialization in the giant slalom. Over his career he won two Olympic gold medals — in the combined at Turin 2006 and in the giant slalom at Sochi 2014 — and dominated the World Cup giant slalom discipline, claiming the season title five times (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014).
Ligety also excelled at the World Championships: he was world champion in the giant slalom in 2011 and reclaimed the title in 2013, when he also surprised by taking gold in the super‑G and in the combined, earning three titles at the Schladming championships. His World Cup record includes 25 victories (24 in giant slalom and 1 in the super combined) and 52 podiums, figures that place him among the greatest giant slalom specialists in history.
Beyond his sporting success, Ligety is an entrepreneur and cofounder of the eyewear and accessories company Shred Optics. After suffering an injury in 2021, he chose to retire from competition that year, closing a career noted for technical skill, consistency in the giant slalom and contributions to American skiing.
