About

Teófilo Juan Cubillas Arizaga is one of Peru’s and South America’s greatest footballers, renowned for his technique, power, and instinct for goal. An attacking midfielder with a notable goalscoring gift, he was distinguished by his shooting and long‑range free kicks, becoming a benchmark in the 1970s and 1980s.

For the Peru national team he was a key figure: he won the 1975 Copa América, took part in the 1970, 1978 and 1982 World Cups, and left a record of 26 goals in 107 appearances, while ranking among the World Cup top scorers. In 1970 he was chosen the tournament’s best young player and, in 1972, was named South America’s best player.

At club level he made his debut with Alianza Lima and also enjoyed notable spells with FC Porto and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, collecting domestic titles and individual honours. The IFFHS credits him with 268 goals in top‑division competitions, placing him among the most prolific midfielders in history.

His continental renown comes both from decisive displays in big matches and from his longevity and prestige: he is remembered as a complete playmaker whose influence remains in the memory of South American football.
