About
Terry Gilbert Dischinger was an American professional basketball player prominent in the NBA during the 1960s and the early 1970s. A Purdue graduate, he led the Big Ten in scoring for three seasons, set several school records, earned All-American honors, and posted high scoring and rebounding averages in college.
As a young starter for the U.S. national team, he won the gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics alongside players such as Oscar Robertson and Jerry West; that team was later inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame. He entered the NBA in 1962, was named Rookie of the Year in 1963, and was a three-time All-Star during his career.
Dischinger played for the Chicago Zephyrs/Baltimore Bullets, the Detroit Pistons (in two stints), and the Portland Trail Blazers, delivering strong performances before and after a period of military service. After retiring from basketball, he completed his studies and practiced dentistry as an orthodontist, closing a career that combined athletic achievement and academic training.
