About

Terry Waite is a British human rights activist, diplomat and author, best known for his role as an emissary of the Church of England in humanitarian negotiations and for his experience as a hostage in Lebanon. As assistant for Communion affairs to the Archbishop of Canterbury in the 1980s, he coordinated international missions, interceded for the release of hostages in Iran and Libya, and organized high-level diplomatic visits, including the first visit by an Archbishop of Canterbury to China.

In 1987, while acting as an envoy to negotiate the release of journalists and other prisoners in Beirut, he was kidnapped and remained in captivity for nearly five years, largely in solitary confinement; his release in 1991 became a widely publicized event. After that period, he turned the experience into literary work and public reflection: his book Taken on Trust (1994) was a bestseller and led to a career in writing, lecturing and activism.

Waite devoted himself to humanitarian causes and to supporting families of hostages, cofounding and chairing international relief initiatives and associating with various charities. He received academic honors and awards for his work on human rights and religious freedom, leaving a legacy of mediation, religious service and advocacy for prisoners and victims of conflict.
