About

Theodor W. Adorno was a German philosopher, sociologist, musicologist and composer, a central figure of the so-called Frankfurt School. Trained in Frankfurt and refined as a composer in Vienna under Alban Berg, he combined a classical musical education with critical reflection on modernity, becoming one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century in aesthetics and social theory.

Author of key works such as Dialectic of Enlightenment, Minima Moralia and Negative Dialectics, Adorno mounted a forceful critique of instrumental reason, the culture industry and market society, linking technical rationality to the rise of authoritarian forms such as fascism. His research at the Institute for Social Research contributed to studies on authoritarianism, antisemitism and propaganda.

As a public intellectual, he took part in rebuilding Germany’s cultural life after the war and engaged in controversies with contemporaries over science, authenticity and forms of political resistance. His theoretical output, shaped by negative dialectics and a critical reading of modernist aesthetics, left a lasting legacy in the social sciences, cultural studies and aesthetic philosophy.
