About

Théodore André Monod was a French naturalist, explorer and humanist whose academic and field work left a lasting impact on the natural sciences and Saharan research. A professor at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle and founder of the Institut fondamental d'Afrique noire in Senegal, Monod belonged to several scientific academies and was a cofounder of the World Academy of Art and Science, reflecting his institutional and intellectual influence across the twentieth century.

His field career focused initially on the study of monk seals in Mauritania and, above all, on more than six decades of work in the Sahara. There he searched for meteorites and studied desert flora, describing numerous plant species and identifying significant Neolithic sites. Among his most discussed archaeological finds is the Asselar man, a skeleton from the Adrar des Ifoghas of great importance for studies of ancient Sahel populations.

Author of a vast body of work—scientific and popular—comprising roughly 700 papers and several travel books and essays, Monod also researched marine groups such as the Gnathiidae and Scaridae. Internationally recognized, he received honors including the Royal Geographical Society’s Patrons' Medal and is remembered for his legacy of research, conservation and humanist reflection on nature.
