About

Timmy Thomas was an American R&B singer, keyboardist, songwriter and producer whose career flourished between the 1960s and the 1990s. Initially known as a supporting instrumentalist for names such as Donald Byrd and Cannonball Adderley, he worked as a studio musician in Memphis before establishing himself as a solo artist. His work includes releases on labels such as Goldwax, Climax, Glades and TK Records.

The high point of his career came in 1972 with the single “Why Can’t We Live Together,” which topped the R&B chart and reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, selling millions of copies and bringing him international recognition. Throughout the 1970s he released albums and several singles that circulated on the R&B charts, demonstrating consistency beyond the label of “one-hit wonder.”

In addition to his solo career, Thomas worked extensively as a session musician and producer, collaborating with artists such as Gwen McCrae and later contributing to projects in the 1990s for labels like LaFace. His musical legacy is marked by the combination of social messaging in songs such as his biggest hit and continued activity on the soul and R&B circuits into the 1980s and 1990s.
