About

Tom Laughlin (Thomas Robert Laughlin Jr.) was an American actor, independent filmmaker, educator, and activist, best known for creating, starring in, and directing the Billy Jack tetralogy, produced between 1969 and 1977. These low-budget films achieved notable popularity and influenced film marketing practices, particularly the wide-release campaign for The Trial of Billy Jack (1974), which changed exhibition and promotion habits in the U.S.

Before that success, Laughlin worked as an actor in films and television series in the 1950s and 1960s, with roles in titles such as South Pacific and The Delinquents; he also directed and wrote independent productions of his own. In the 1960s he stepped away temporarily from cinema to found and run a Montessori school in Santa Monica, which became the largest of its kind in the United States before encountering financial difficulties.

Over his life he worked in diverse fields: education, domestic violence counseling, and psychology (he wrote on Jungian topics), and he remained active civically and politically, running for presidential office in later decades. His film work and activism left a legacy in independent cinema and in methods of promoting commercial films.
