Tom Paxton is an American folk singer-songwriter whose career spans more than six decades. Known for songs that became standards—among them “The Last Thing on My Mind,” “Bottle of Wine,” “The Marvelous Toy,” and “Ramblin’ Boy”—Paxton has also worked as a music educator and advocated for a balance between traditional repertoire and new compositions.
Active from the early days of the Greenwich Village folk scene, he was a regular at venues such as the Gaslight Cafe and collaborated with central figures of the 1960s movement. His songs have been recorded by a wide range of artists, from Pete Seeger and Joan Baez to Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash, extending his reach beyond the folk circuit.
Committed to social causes, Paxton took part in civil rights and labor actions—including events like Freedom Summer—and wrote songs that directly addressed contemporary events and concerns, such as the killings of activists in 1964.
Awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, his legacy endures through the wide dissemination of his songs, his influence on generations of performers, and his defense of the singer-songwriter tradition within folk music.
