About

Tommy Tune is one of the foremost figures in American musical theatre, known for a long career as a dancer, actor, choreographer, director, and producer. Over his career he won ten Tony Awards — including the rare achievement of consecutive wins in both Direction and Choreography — and received the National Medal of Arts as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Trained in drama in Texas, Tune first gained attention on Broadway in the 1960s and established himself in subsequent decades, directing and choreographing notable productions such as The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Nine, My One and Only, Grand Hotel, and The Will Rogers Follies. His work combines dance virtuosity, a strong sense of spectacle, and skillful stage direction.

Beyond the theatre, he appeared in films and on television, released an album, and created concert and cruise ship shows. His influence is also reflected in awards that bear his name, created to encourage student musical theatre in Houston. A memoirist and active public figure, Tune is remembered both for his artistic inventiveness and for his role in training and celebrating the American musical tradition.
