About
Antone Charles "Tony" Costa was an American serial killer active in Truro, Massachusetts, between 1968 and 1969, whose violent behavior and the mutilated bodies of several women drew national and international attention. After dismembered remains of four victims appeared in a clearing he used to grow marijuana, Costa became the prime suspect: he knew the women, and his fingerprint was matched to items found at the site.
The case attracted further notoriety because of sensational claims by the district attorney about cannibalism—assertions later judged false—and because of literary and journalistic coverage that included references by Kurt Vonnegut and inspired fictional works. In 1970 Costa was convicted of the murders of Mary Anne Wysocki and Patricia Walsh and sentenced to life imprisonment.
While incarcerated, he wrote an unpublished novel in which he presented his version of events, and he remained linked to suspicions about other deaths, without confirmation. Costa died in prison in 1974, officially by suicide by hanging, a circumstance later questioned by some. His crimes left a lasting imprint on public memory and on true crime literature.
