About

Trini Lopez was an American singer and guitarist of Mexican descent who rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s. He achieved international recognition with his live album Trini Lopez at PJ’s (1963); his version of "If I Had a Hammer" became a worldwide hit, selling more than a million copies and earning him a gold record. During the decade he released a string of singles and scored appearances on the pop and adult contemporary charts, including "Lemon Tree" and "Michael".

Beyond his singing career, Lopez played a notable role in popular music through his collaboration with the instrument industry: in 1964 he designed two guitar models for Gibson — the Trini Lopez Standard and the Lopez Deluxe — which became highly sought after by collectors. He also worked as an entertainer in nightclubs and on television, broadening his reach as a performer.

He remained active in recording and touring throughout his life, performing at charity events and making records into recent years. His repertoire mixed American standards with elements of his Latin heritage, leaving a legacy as a charismatic interpreter and an influential figure among pop performers and guitarist collectors.
