About
Valerie Ritchie Perrine was an American actress known for memorable roles in 1970s and 1980s cinema. She rose to prominence for her portrayal of Honey Bruce in Lenny (1974), which earned her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, the BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Her performance as Montana Wildhack in Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) also helped establish her film career.
Throughout the decade Perrine appeared in widely seen productions such as Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980), in which she played Miss Teschmacher, and The Electric Horseman (1979). In 1976 she portrayed Carlotta Monti, W. C. Fields’s companion, in W. C. Fields and Me. Her career encompassed both major honors and less well-received projects, such as Can't Stop the Music (1980), which later acquired cult status.
In subsequent decades she worked in film and television, with occasional appearances in productions including The Border (1982) and What Women Want (2000). In recent years she became the subject of the documentary Valerie, which examines her career and her experience with Parkinson’s disease, a condition that affected her health until her death in 2026. She is remembered for her versatility and for roles that marked a turning point in American cinema of the 1970s.
