Valeska Gert was a German artist of Jewish origin whose career spanned dance, cabaret, film and pioneering performance. Known for satirical, highly expressive pieces since World War I, she created provocative solos and plays—such as Canaille—that dismantled social conventions through gesture, noise and a scandalous presence that drew Dadaists and Berlin avant‑garde circles.

In the 1920s she also established herself in silent and transitional cinema, appearing in significant films of the period, and from 1926 introduced her “Tontänze” (sound‑dances), blending voice and movement. The rise of Nazism interrupted her career in Germany: barred from performing because of her Jewish ancestry, she went into exile and worked in cabarets and theatrical productions in London and later in the United States.

In New York and Provincetown she created artistic gathering places—including the Beggar’s Bar and the cabaret Valeska’s—where she brought together and employed figures such as Tennessee Williams and other emerging artists. Returning to Europe after the war, she resumed the German cabaret scene and, in old age, made a notable comeback to film, collaborating with prominent directors and influencing generations of performers.
