About

Vance Hartke was an American Democratic politician who represented Indiana in the United States Senate from 1959 to 1977. Before entering Congress he served as mayor of Evansville and practiced law locally; his legislative career was notable for support of the Great Society social programs and for defending civil rights.

In the Senate, Hartke became known as one of the early public opponents of the Vietnam War, a stance that put him at odds with President Lyndon B. Johnson. He served prominently as chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee and sat on the Finance and Commerce committees, promoting benefits for veterans, student loan programs, and expanded access to dialysis treatment.

He also played a significant role in vehicle safety and transportation, pressing for automotive safety equipment following a family tragedy, and helped create initiatives such as the International Executive Service Corps and measures that influenced the establishment of the U.S. Institute of Peace. His Senate career ended with defeat by Richard Lugar in 1976; he later faced a conviction for an election-related misdemeanor in 1994.
