Vange Leonel

About

Vange Leonel (Maria Evangelina Leonel Gandolfo) was a singer-songwriter and rhythm guitarist from São Paulo who became prominent in the Brazilian post-punk scene of the 1980s as the voice of the band Nau. With a timbre shaped by blues and soul, she achieved wider recognition as a solo artist beginning in 1991 with the album Vange, which included the hit “Noite Preta,” the opening theme for the telenovela Vamp, and cemented her place in contemporary popular music.

Alongside her musical work, Vange built a steady literary and journalistic output: she published collections of chronicles, plays and a novel, and contributed to outlets such as Revista da Folha and CartaCapital. Her work addresses concerns about gender, sexuality and urban culture, reflected both in her lyrics and in her writing and activism.

Openly lesbian, she was an activist for LGBT and women’s rights, and in 1996 she co-founded the independent label Medusa Records with Cilmara Bedaque, her partner and artistic collaborator. Her legacy brings together music, writing and activism, and was recognized posthumously with the Order of Cultural Merit.
